Scarring hair loss, also known as cicatricial alopecia, is the loss of hair which is accompanied by scarring. This is in contrast to non-scarring hair loss. It can be caused by a diverse group of rare disorders that destroy the hair follicle, replace it with scar tissue, and cause permanent hair loss.
It is caused by inflammation that destroys the hair follicles and this hair loss is irreversible. inflammation directed at the upper part of the hair follicle where the stem cells and sebaceous gland (oil gland) are located. If the stem cells and sebaceous gland are destroyed, there is no possibility for the regeneration of the hair follicle, leading to permanent hair loss. Cicatricial alopecias are not contagiousThe inflammation is caused by fungal infection, chemicals, traction, discoid lupus erythematosus, lichen planopilaris, dissecting cellulitis, tufted folliculitis, folliculitis decalvans, alopecia mucinosa, central centrifugal cicatricial alopecia, and acne keloidalis. The usual treatment is corticosteroids in topical creams and by injection into the affected skin. Additionally could be used antimalarial and isotretinoin drugs. For inflammation cases it’s been used antibiotics and isotretinoin.
In most severe cases the bald areas can be surgically removed and bald patches transplanted with hair from health areas.
